POST 16 - The Kuleshov Effect

Image
THE KULESHOV EFFECT. The Kuleshov effect is a film editing (montage) effect demonstrated by Soviet filmmaker Lev Kuleshov in the 1910s and 1920s. It is a mental phenomenon by which viewers derive more meaning from the interaction of two sequential shots than from a single shot in isolation. Here is a video explaining further what the Kuleshov Effect is.

POST 15 - Alfred Hitchcock Loves Bikinis

Alfred Hitchcock Loves Bikinis. Our group came up with two ideas that relate to the Kuleshov Effect. STORYBOARD This shows our initial ideas, that were quickly made into small clips.  The final outcomes are below.

POST 14 - Sound in Love Actually

Image
LOVE ACTUALLY SOUND STUDY This video shows the original clip from the opening scene of the film Love Actually. Diegetic and Non - Diegetic Sound Diegetic sound is any s ound presented as originated from source within the film's world. Diegetic sound can be either on screen or off screen depending on whatever its source is within the frame or outside the frame. Non-diegetic sound is represented as coming from the a source outside story space. This video explains diagetic and non-diagetic sounds within film... HERE IS OUR FINAL OUTCOME:  Overall, I think our final outcome had been successful, as the timing had been close to accurate. However, the only thing we would have changed is where we recorded the narration, as the room had made the dialogue full of echo sound, we chose to record the sound in that room as it had been silent and empty, therefore it had been successful in not having any background noise, which had been important for a narration.

POST 13 - Sound in 13 Reasons Why

Image
SOUND STUDY This is the original scene from the series, this allowed us to study each aspect, as we had watched it multiple times to get the timings, sound effects and the narrative in time. When we first watched it we listened to the sounds, and then the second time we chose to record the timings, for example when the narrator (Hannah Baker played by Katherine Langford) would stop and start speaking we would note down. This made it easier when editing the final outcome as we already had an understanding of the timings within the scene. Diegetic and Non - Diegetic Sound. Diegetic sound is any s ound presented as originated from source within the film's world. Diegetic sound can be either on screen or off screen depending on whatever its source is within the frame or outside the frame. POST 12 - Mise-en-scene in Him & Her

Image
Mise En Scene - Him and Her. I chose to focus on the costume and make-up when watching an episode of the BBC series 'Him&Her', I chose to concentrate on this part of the mise-en-scene because in the episode that I watched, there were quite a few different characters wearing very different costumes with different make-up.  At the beginning of the episode when only the two main characters (Becky and Steve) were in the scene, the costume and make-up was very simplistic and minimal, with them both wearing pyjamas and quite cheap looking clothing as well as what appeared to be no make-up. This made it look as though they had only just woken up and hadn't yet left their bed. Although they weren't wearing lots of clothes in the opening scene, the clothes that they were wearing looked quite dirty and relatively inexpensive which I think shows that they don't have lots of money, which I think is also shown through the setting of the scene. However compar

POST 11 - Mise-en-Scene in Ferris Bueller

Image
Mise En Scene in Ferris Bueller. Ferris Bueller's Day Off is set in a suburban area in America, although they go to Chicago to skip school. Ferris is a high school student who pretends to be ill to skip his lessons. This film is set in the 8Os so this is probably out of date to the modern age students. Ferris is a typical male student who wears a American football shirt. Ferris is confident and relaxed. He is the leader of the bunch and every 8Os film has to have a sidekick. Cameron is a troubled fellow as his parent do not want to do anything with and his dad only loves his car. He worries about practically anything and always disagrees with Ferris. He wears the same type of clothing as Ferris.

POST 9 - Mise-en-scene Analysis of a Still From Her ( add picture again )

Image
Mise En Scene - Her Setting: This photo is set in a city, presumably quite a large city due to the size of the buildings seen in the background. Also because of the fact that there are many people in the background walking the streets showing that there is a large population. The man centred in the middle of the screen is clearly the character of focus in this scene. Lighting: The level of light in this picture is quite low, showing that it is either early in the day or late at night. The low levels of light may imply that the man in the focus of this scene is sad or anxious, which is also shown by his body language…. Figure expression: The character in this scene is shown folding his arms and looking down towards the floor, this implies that he is sad or maybe upset or vulnerable , due to the fact that he is trying to avoid eye contact and making his body as small as possible. Also, the people in the rest of the scene in the background are either in pairs or relat
