POST 34 - Macro Elements of Film Form

The Fundamentals of Caring

Storyline:

A writer (Paul Rudd) retires after a personal tragedy and becomes a disabled teen's caregiver. When the two embark on an impromptu road trip, their ability to cope is tested as they start to understand the importance of hope and friendship.

Genre:

The genre for the film ‘ The fundamentals of Caring ` is a comedy/drama. We know this because although Trever ( Craig Roberts ) is fighting a tough disorder, the film remains happy and jokey. I think the producer has done this so that it brightens up the mood and makes it not too sad and depressing.

Representation:

The social groups that are portrayed in this fil  are the disabled and the divorced. The disabled social group is represented very well as it shows that although you may have a disability and you may be restricted I what you can do, it doesn't stop you from trying new thigs and enjoying every moment of life. The divorced social group is also represented very well as it shows that although you  may be going through tough times at home, you still have to push through and make a living and that you always have time to care for other who are in need of help.

Narrative:

The narrative used in the film, The Fundamentals of Caring, is linear. They have used this narrative because it really shows Trevor's, the main character, progression and how Ben Benjamin, the carer, helps him to become confident and do things he never thought he could do.

Audience:

The target audience for this film is mainly focused on the disabled. However, I think that it could also be aimed at anyone who has to deal with similar things in life or simply just wants to understand what disabled people have to go through.  I would expect the target audience to relate to Trevor and the difficulties that he goes through in this day to day life. On the other hand, I think that other spectators would struggles to understand what Trevor goes through and just how hard his life can be.
